The ritual art of Theyyam in Kannur

The ritual art of Theyyam in Kannur

€1290 per person

This 4-day itinerary invites you to discover Theyyam, a vibrant ancient ritual art, while exploring Kannur’s rich heritage, authentic crafts, and exquisite local cuisine. A journey that promises to awaken all your senses.

Theyyam is one of India’s most spectacular and ancient ritual art forms; it is believed to predate Hinduism and originate from the monsoon celebrations of indigenous peoples. Gradually, this indigenous culture was enriched by Hindu traditions. It is therefore a unique combination of music, chanting, miming, invocations, and trance dance that astounds visitors.

The dance or invocation is usually performed in front of the village temple (Kavu) or individual shrines called devasthana, located in the Kannur and Kasaragod districts of northern Kerala.

The ritual, which can last up to 24 hours, recounts the legends of heroes, gods, and celestial spirits. The Theyyam is considered by performers to be a channel to a particular god or spirit to seek their blessing. There are over 400 distinct Theyyams, each with its own music, style, and choreography.

The performer’s flamboyant, mysterious, and even frightening makeup, as well as the sometimes immense costumes, are an integral part of the ritual. It is said that it is during this first stage that the performer gains supernatural powers and can thus embody or communicate with the gods and spirits. Music is also essential in Theyyam, particularly the percussion that sets the rhythm of the trance.

Attending a Theyyam performance is a unique and powerful experience, leaving you with a sense of touching the sacred and returning to the roots of ancient India.
