Andhra Pradesh: in the footsteps of ancient kingdoms
Andhra Pradesh, whose Sanskrit name literally means “the Telugu state” or the land of the Andhras, takes its name from an ancient people, the Andhras (or Satavahanas), whose first historical record dates back to around 230 BC. Over the centuries, various dynasties ruled this region, including the Shakas, the Ikshvaku, the Eastern Chalukya, and the Vijayanagaras.
These successive kingdoms bequeathed a rich heritage, not only Hindu, but also Buddhist. It is important to note that the Andhras were initially Buddhist, which explains the significant presence of vestiges of this religion. Andhra Pradesh is home to no fewer than 140 Buddhist sites, testifying to a flourishing history of Buddhism in the region, spanning from the 3rd century BCE to the 14th century CE.
