A former kingdom of Mysuru (Mysore), Karnataka is located in southwestern India which is bordered by the lush coastal region of Karavali and Malnad, a mountainous region belonging to the long chain of western ghats. Karnataka’s capital is the modern Bengaluru (Bangalore), a centre of new technologies located on the Maidan Plateau.
Karnataka has been home to several indigenous empires that have contributed to the cultural wealth of this region. Thus, the kingdom of Vijayanagara, which was before the Maratha Empire one of the last ramparts against the Mughal domination, left us one of the most prestigious sites of India: the city of Hampi. The medieval Hoysala kings, for their part, have marked with their harmonious seal the sites of Beluru, Halebidu and Somnathpur.
