West Bengal, a cultural state
West Bengal is a state in Northeastern India. The fourth largest region of India and the third largest economy after Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Its capital is the famous Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
Bengal prospered in the 13th century under the Mughal Empire. The British would come to dominate the region from the end of the 18th century and made Calcutta its capital of British India. When India gained independence in 1947, Bengal was split in two, with the predominantly Muslim part becoming Bangladesh and the predominantly Hindu western part becoming West Indian Bengal.
Kolkata has a rich cultural heritage, and many Indian intellectuals, such as the writer-poet Rabindranath Tagore, have come from this city. Kolkata is also famous for its spiritual leader such as Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and Mother Teresa who contributed to a large extent, the aura of this city.
During the festival of Durga Puja, the main festival of Kolkata, the city is completely nocturnal, full of lights and embellished with temporary temples all vying to be the most inventive and creative…a visit to West Bengal during this period is a must!
