Le Madhya Pradesh, ancient kingdoms & temples of love
Madhya Pradesh literally means ‘the state of the centre’. With Bhopal as its capital, this is the second largest state of India.
Khajuraho, and its splendid temples are adorned with ‘sensual’ frescoes, is one of the essential cities of Madhya Pradesh. Gwalior, ‘the pearl of the Mughol empire’, with its imposing fortress and also the small city of Orchha, with its sumptuous monuments of the Bundela kings, are worth seeing.
On the mystical side, Madhya Pradesh is not left out either. Around Indore are two of the twelve ‘jyotir lingams’, the most venerated ‘lingams of light’, which are symbols of the god Shiva. Heading east, we come to Sanchi, one of the most remarkable Buddhist sites in India with stupas dating back to King Ashoka. Less known, but equally sacred, Chitrakoot – straddling Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, is a mythical city linked to the Ramayana, the great Indian epic; it is said that its thick forests would have hosted Lord Rama during his exile from the kingdom of Ayodhya.
