Sikkim: wide open spaces & Buddhist culture
Sikkim is a state in northeastern India bordered by Bhutan, Tibet, and Nepal. It is the least populated state in the country and the second smallest state in India, after Goa. Surrounded by the majestic Himalayan range, it offers magnificent landscapes, including the third highest peak in the world, Kangchenjunga, which rises to 8,586 m. Sikkim also has alpine meadows where a multitude of wildflowers flourish, including some 30 varieties of rhododendrons. From 1470 to 1834 CE, Sikkim was ruled by the Chogyals, Buddhist priest-kings of the Namgyal dynasty who erected a string of Tibetan-inspired gompas; they are found scattered throughout the state. Sikkim is therefore perfect for lovers of wide open spaces and trekking, as well as for those passionate about Buddhist culture.
