Bihar, the cradle of Buddhism
Bihar is a region of central India, the cradle of Buddhism, whose main attraction is the city of Bodhgaya in the southern part of the state. It was in Bodhgaya, under a bodhi tree, that Siddhartha Gautama becomes the ‘Buddha’. From this period onwards, Bihar became an important center of Buddhism teaching. Various archaeological sites like Nalanda, Kesariya and Vaishali attest to this spiritual effervescence. Nalanda, a World Heritage Site, was one of the world’s leading, and is reputed to be the worlds oldest universities; it is believed to have had up to 2,000 teachers and 10,000 students.
